I Love Touring Italy - Lake Garda


If you are looking for a European tourist destination, reconsider Lake Garda located mostly in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. Depending on your interests, this gorgeous area might be an ideal vacation spot. You can get excellent Italian food, and wash it down with fine local wine. It is hardly an undiscovered area, but that shouldn't stop you from going. With a limited exertion you should be able to find some relatively untouched spots. We start our Lake Garda tour at its northern tip, Riva del Garda, situated just inside the region of Trentino-Alto Adige. Tignale, our first stop in Lombardy, is in fact on the panoramic road off the main road. It consists of six hamlets each about sixteen hundred feet (five hundred meters) above sea level. This setting is great with its hills, mountains, ravines, olive trees, and luxuriant vegetation. Early in the First Millenium Tignale was evangelized and subsequently became the site of the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Star, or the Madonna of Montecastello, probably built upon a temple to a pagan god. Later this area was fortified. Be sure to see the painting of the chase and killing of a celebrated local bandit, Giovanni Beatrici of Gargnano. Given the difficult terrain and the independent nature of the local residents Tignale has been active while numerous wars. Some troops installations can still be seen in the area. Tignale is home to the Visitor's town of the Parco Alto Garda Bresciano (Upper Brescian Garda Park) an Alpine landscape that covers approximately 150 square miles (380 square kilometers) and nine local municipalities on Lake Garda's western shore.

Gargnano, citizen about three thousand, is a great place for fishing, snorkeling, and sailing. In fact it is one of the best places to sail on the western shore of Lake Garda. The town's major attraction is the Chiesa di San Francesco (Cloister of Saint Francis) and its campanile (bell tower). The church graveyard contains Roman gravestones. As you walk nearby town you may see some houses that still show the traces of cannon balls fired while the Third War of Italian Independence in 1866.

In 1943 Mussolini founded his short lived Repubblica Sociale Italia (Italian collective Republic) here. He installed himself in a late Nineteenth Century art nouveau villa called Villa Feltrinelli about two miles (three kilometers) north of town. You can get your revenge by staying in Villa Feltrinelli, which is now an upscale hotel, but you'll have to shell out big bucks to do so. I'm told that you won't be disappointed with its beauty and luxury along with magnificent gardens and a fine library. So we see that even towards the end of his days, Benito was able to live well. Gardone Riviera, citizen twenty-five hundred, is best known for the mansion Vittoriale degli Italiani (The shrine of Italian victories) and the major Italian writer Gabriele d'Annunzio who lived there from 1922 until his death in 1938. It was the capital of Mussolini's Nazi-backed puppet state, the Italian collective Republic, also known as the Republic of Salò. Its main sights comprise a Fifteenth Century Duomo (Cathedral), the Sixteenth Century Palazzo della Magnifica Patria (Palace of the Magnificent Fatherland) with a historical museum face among other subjects, the Resistance against Fascism, and a Palace hosting an archeological museum. Every Saturday morning there is a great outdoor shop where you can forget about politics, but frankly this part of Italy has not been a major political town for more than sixty years.

Sirmione, citizen about seven thousand, is our last stop in Lombardy. This area was by all means; of course located by citizen more than two thousand years ago; some may have lived in houses on stilts. Its amount one tourist attraction is the Grotte di Catullo (Grotto of Catullus) a large rectangular buildings said to have been the site of the fun-loving Roman poet Catullus. The truth is that his villa was most likely nearby. Of more interest to the kids is Italy's largest theme park, the Gardaland Theme Park with dolphins, state-of-the-art roller coasters, and lots more. It's about 8 miles (12 kilometers) east of Sirmione on the Veneto side of the border. Kids measuring less than one meter tall get in free. Bardolino, citizen somewhat exceeding six thousand, is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Garda. It's the biggest resort on the lake with numerous shops and historical remains. Some of the participants put crushed grapes on their skin, others drink grape juice, and still others drink the local wine. I think they all have fun, even if they aren't cured.

The Romanesque San Severo Church and San Zeno Church both date from nearby the turn of the Millennium. San Severo is the most prominent church in the region and features huge frescoes. San Zeno's chapel is considerably older than the church itself. For a convert of pace visit the local Oil Museum, devoted to olive oil, not to petroleum products.

What about food? When you talk lake, fish forms a major part of the local cuisine. Indigenous fish comprise the rare Lake Garda carp, whitefish, lake trout, eel, pike, tench, and perch. Bardolino Superiore Docg is a dry red wine also produced from local grapes but to more stringent specifications. This wine must be aged for a minimum of one year prior to sale. Notice, when introducing Bardolino wines I said the best-known local wine, not the best local wine. Wines are produced all along Lake Garda. Rule for yourself which one is the best.

14 Tips for A better Juice Fast


I'm a fairly wholesome someone and "walk my own talk" in the field of natural health, but let me tell you, I had to mentally put in order for the 40-day juice fast that my husband and I completed last summer. These are some of the things we learned from our explore and by doing the fast.

General Juicing Rules:

o Drink freshly prepared juice and do not store the juice for over 24 hours. If you can't drink it immediately, put it into a glass jar (filled to the top) and put a lid on it to forestall oxidation. Juice rapidly loses therapeutic and nutritional value while storage.

o Raw fruits and vegetables are not always compatible when eaten together. Apples are the exception. You can also mix pears with Jicama.

o Melons should be juiced by themselves. Making the entire meal melon is an option.

o Avoid using pre-bottled or sweetened juices. All the live enzymes are inactivated when they are pasteurized.

o Juices don't stimulate acids to be released from the stomach, but orange and tomato juice are high in acids and you may want to mix these juices with other less acidic ones.

o I've read that cucumbers may not be good to mix with other vegetables as they are in the melon family, but it seems to work fine for us. We do limit cucumber to less than 25% of the total volume however.

o Don't add more than 25% green juice to your vegetable juices (unless you have a barf pail handy!)

o Juicing Greens--you might want to do this in between harder vegetables, the juice sludges at the lowest and doesn't pour out in effect if you juice them first. For example, I juice a merge of carrots, then a bunch of parsley, then cram a merge more carrots in after the parsley to get the juicer interesting again.

o Dilute all fruit juice with water (one part juice to 2-4 parts water) and drink throughout the day. We've found that 2 cups fruit juice blended with ½ tray of ice cubes comes up to 4 cups--the perfect dilution and it's frothy cold.

o Vegetable juices need not be diluted.

Tips for a best Fast:

o Your pre-fast Diet Foods.

o Cut back on some supplements and medications. If you are over 65 you will want to take your daily vitamins (if you are on them) while the fast. You will need to discuss this with your health care team as to which medications should be prolonged with a fast. Ordinarily most medications and supplements are withdrawn while a fast, but exceptions occur--especially when they have to do with the endocrine principles (e.g. Insulin, thyroid, heart medications, etc.) And even though juices supply lots of nutrients, some physicians recommend use of an abbreviated list of vitamins and minerals for elderly fasters.

o If you are hypoglycemic, have someone supervise your fast. You may need to add a protein drink to your schedule or add some egg white powder to your juice.

o If you wear dentures, keep them in while your fast so that your gums will not shrink.

o Do take time out for naps if necessary.

Fasting dips: A fasting dip occasionally happens while fasting as toxins are loosened and cleansed from the body, cell by cell, even within deep tissue. At inevitable times of your fast you may sense feelings of weakness, discouragement, negativity and an overpowering urge to just want to quit (We sure did!) dinky things may seem like big things and emotions, memories and hurts you have harbored from the past are trying to come out. while these times, breathe, meditate, talk to someone who has experienced fasting, pray and do an enema. Tomorrow things will look different. You will have regrouped and can continue the process until your goal is complete.
